Replacing a Toyota Key

There are several options to consider if your Toyota key fob is damaged. If the internal electronic components of your Toyota are in good shape, a service center can make a new key at an affordable price.

If the case is damaged, it will need to be replaced. If the case is intact, try opening it using the hidden key or a tiny pry tool to open the visible notch. Then, gently lift the circuit board to reveal the battery.

Keys Lost or Damaged

It can be stressful when you lose your Toyota keys or when the key fob is damaged. If you are looking for a replacement for your traditional metal key or a high-tech remote key fob, we'll provide the ideal solution for you.

Toyota offers one of the most advanced car keys available on the market. They include transponder chips that communicate with the vehicle in order to prevent unauthorised starting and to lock the engine when the incorrect key is used. They also let you lock and unlock the vehicle remotely and start it. This added security comes with the cost. Replacing damaged or lost Toyota key could cost hundreds of dollars.

The blade of the blade of your Toyota key will tell you if it has a transponder. The key is equipped with a chip if it has an encircling dot or dimple on one side, or an "H" or a "G" marking. If the key isn't marked at all, or has a large bump on the top, it's not a transponder key.

Smart Keys

If you own a toyota key cutting that's equipped with smart keys it could be possible to open the doors and start the engine without ever taking your keys out of your pocket or purse. Smart keys can also be used to store vehicle settings for various drivers and remotely unlock windows and the sunroof. You could be able to set speed limits for your child using the smart key.

You must be within 10 feet of the vehicle to use the smart key. Once you are close enough the vehicle will activate the courtesy lights and then open the door for the driver or passenger. You can then press the button on the key fob to unlock the trunk, too. Many modern smart keys come with a telescoping key blade that can accommodate different hand sizes, and also provide more range of access to the lock and ignition buttons.

Like traditional car keys, the smart key fob is equipped with an embedded transponder chip that sends out an encrypted signal each time you press the lock or unlock buttons. It's designed to stop thieves from hot-wiring or taking your vehicle by disabling the engine immobilizer. However, there are a few limitations to this method of protection. A tech-savvy thief could still use a scanning device to locate the code and then send it to the key fob.

A newer smart key, such as the Mercedes-Benz SmartKey, uses the unique technology of rolling codes. A computer inside the vehicle checks the unique code every time you insert the key. This prevents unauthorized use, since it is nearly impossible for the scanner to read the same rolling codes repeatedly.

Your smart key might be dead if it fails to respond to the lock and unlock buttons. You can replace the battery in most fobs by taking the circuit board from the case. Take a picture of the old battery and note down the place where the new one is in the case so you can assemble it correctly when you're done. Most Toyota models use a CR2032 battery which you can purchase in Freehold at any local store.

Key Fob Battery Replacement

Change the battery on your key fob isn't as difficult or time-consuming as it may sound. You can find replacement batteries at any big-box retailer or hardware store. You can also order them on the internet. In addition to being cheap, a new battery can help restore the function of your key fob.

The first step is to take the key metal from the fob. A small metal button is typically located just above the key portion of the fob. Press it to release the key. Then, disassemble the fob. This can be done by pressing the small hole on the fob that appears to be a keyhole or by inserting the flat tool into the smallest hole. Once you have the fob divided into two pieces--a front and back--sliding an instrument into the notch or small opening will allow you to access the battery compartment.

Look at the battery It is likely to be silver and shaped as an oval. The battery will have a label that indicates the type of replacement battery you require. After you have purchased the new battery, take the old one from the case and replace it with the new. Be careful not to contact the flat surface of the battery which are prone to fingerprints and may affect the life of the battery.

Reinstall the key fob case. If you're careful you should not be forced into place. If it isn't snapping into place, gently apply pressure around the edges of the frame to separate it. Attach the key to the metal frame and switch it on to test the fob. Once everything's reassembled the key fob should be as good as new. Key Fob Case Replacement

While Toyota Key Toyota fobs are a little easier to lose than normal keys, you could still be caught off guard when they disappear during your Belton and Killeen commute. Replacing the case of your Toyota key fob is easy but replacing the internal electronics requires specialized knowledge and training. The first thing you need to do is locate your Toyota keyfob to determine whether it's damaged. If your key fob is completely damaged, you'll require it to be replaced by a dealer in order to get the transponder chip as well as other electronic components programmed into your vehicle. This is more complicated than simply a replacement key fob and will require photo identification and proof of ownership and your vehicle's VIN.

If your key fob is slightly damaged, you might be able to use an entirely new case using the current electronic. It depends on the way in which the key fob was damaged, for instance by water or more severe physical damage. Typically, if the hidden key portion has not been damaged, you can get a new one cut at a Toyota service center and continue using it.

Open the case of your key fob with a flat tool like a small screwdriver. Insert it into the slot or notch. After opening the case, you can lift the circuit board to reveal the battery. Do not force the case open as this could cause electronic components to fail. Remove the battery that was used and note the position of the battery within the case. This will help you replace the battery correctly.
