How to Replace an audi q5 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms if the sensor is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.
