Before Toto was formed the members of the group performed sessions for other musicians. The collaboration led to the formation of Toto in the year 1976.

During the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun the drummer Leland Sklar quit the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included recordings from the tour as well as an interview with the group.
