After prayers the Synagogue shortly took the semblance of a writing school. The game is 100, and four can play at a time. The skin of the head tightens and you can feel a faint, prickly bristling all over the scalp. Impossible to mistake the whirr of a ball over the slate!

You make eleven dollars a week over and above your board and spend it on drink, billiards and fast horses. So surely as I was given up as a bad carcass by the scores of things in the bed because the bulk of my blood was in my heart, so surely did I hear every stroke of a long game at billiards played in the echoing room behind the iron-barred door.

So, we all clapped and cheered and the ladies in the main event wanted to play in our little tournament. Then we said, "okay, let's play well." I messed up again. The consequence was that that disk missed the whole hop-scotch plan a yard or two, and then there was humiliation on one side and laughter on the other.
