This technology is extremely effective in navigating around toys that are left on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out from underneath objects. It also comes with a sensor that can snap Roomba back to reality when it starts to move away from its original position.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom, which don't have bristles and, therefore, tend to be more resistant to tangles than previous models. They're also taller than older rollers, and will fit better under beds and couches with low sides and are designed to help this model navigate more easily across a variety of floor kinds.

What makes the Roomba 980 stand out from other high-end models, though, is its integration of the new dirt detection feature, which uses cameras to detect particles of dirt embedded. This is a great improvement over the previous version, which relied on a sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around a room and clean at least three times from different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. It scored very well on carpets with low pile and on mid-pile. It did a great job collecting pet hair, but struggled with long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

Despite these small shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our top-performing robots, and isn't even close to being as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It has many of the features we would expect from a flagship model but does not have all the fancy apps and smart home integrations you'll get from other top models.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready to use right away. After removing the pull tab for the battery and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all that you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will automatically return to its dock when it is running out of battery or becomes full of sand. There are also indicator lights at the top of the bin that let you know the bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
