Special features such as through-the-door dispensers, ice machines with higher-end features, and customizable flex drawers make them stand out from the crowd.

We asked Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and founder of LS Projects - for her suggestions on how to pick the right home. They weighed storage capacity and layout and energy efficiency, among other aspects.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

As the name suggests, the GE Profile series is geared towards those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. This fridge is loaded with them all, from the Keurig K cup coffee maker in the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. Since this refrigerator costs a premium, I expect better.

This fridge is a good choice, despite the blip. It has a large freezer compartment, which is uncommon in counter-depth French door fridges, and it holds a good amount of frozen food as compared to similar models.

Inside the fridge, you'll find 17 shelves and compartments. The refrigerator compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is typical for a fridge with a french door fridge vs side by side door at this price. It has a decent-sized refrigerator with an ice maker in the left door. However it's not the most spacious one I've seen.

You can alter the shelving in both compartments to create a customized storage layout for what you want to store. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is attractive. The LED lighting adds a nice touch. The in-door storage bins have a third shelf which can be folded down to store tall items. The drawers are equipped with temperature controls so that you can set them to Meat, Beverage, or Deli settings. The drawers are simple to open and shut however I found the plastic's textured coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator within this price range. This includes Wi-Fi as well as app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app is compatible with iOS and Android devices and lets you control your refrigerator from any place around the world. It also has many options for customization. It will also send notifications when the door is unlocked, when the freezer or fridge requires defrosting, and when the filter requires a change.

It would be nice if GE PYE22PYNFS had Precise Fill which is a feature available in a handful of GE refrigerators that allows users to set the amount of cups they wish to pour out. It also has a countdown on the fridge display to display how much water you have remaining, but that's not as useful as Precise fill.

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a striking piece. It's designed to appear like it's a seamless part of your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. The Ice maker we tested is one of the most efficient, and it produces an ice pyramid with only a little water. The temperature of the freezer remained stable at a level that was just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, never fluctuating more than a fraction of a degree--this is key to avoiding freezer burn. The fridge section of the fridge also performed well. It reached the initial temperature within an hour and maintained the temperature throughout our testing.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is a great counter-depth refrigerator that packs plenty of storage into an extremely compact frame. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. Inside, the fridge features a standard French-door layout with gallon-sized bins for the doors on each door as well as two rows of shelves for spill-capture and a set more spacious drawers. The upper right shelf can be folded down to give taller items more room. There's also a full-width drawer for food items and an internal water dispenser.

The refrigerator comes with an ice maker, making it easy to move the frozen ice whenever you need it. The freezer also features innovative design features such as sliding drawers that help you sort your things. It also has a large bin that holds plenty of frozen food items and an storage bin for ice.

Another awesome feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting and more of your fridge from your smartphone. It's a nice way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, particularly if you're away from home.

But while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it doesn't improve the overall performance of the refrigerator. In fact, it took longer to defrost and chill foods in this fridge as compared to other fridges we tried. This could be due to the larger capacity.

The other issue we have with this refrigerator is its doors. They have handles that are sunken at the front, which allows smaller people to open them from the bottom, but they're not easy for taller people to steer closed without slamming the doors. It would have been better if they had front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a good choice for those who want to combine the advantages of a French-door refrigerator's aesthetics with an efficient layout. It has a capacity that is above average for counter-depth models, and it cools evenly. It's also a little less than the best counter depth refrigerators that have an ice maker, making it a great choice.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

This Frigidaire French door refrigerator is a good option when you're looking for a french style american fridge freezer door fridge that won't break the budget. It's a basic design that's not as striking visually as other models however it comes with enough features that make it a great option. Its most important feature, the adjustable temperature drawer helps to keep food like meat and vegetables fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water and ice maker dispenser.

Another great feature is the "Chill Drawer" that sits over the two crisper bins. This drawer lets you redirect some of the fridge's cooling power directly to this area, meaning you can store foods that require special attention. This feature can be adjusted using an outside slider that is located inside the drawer. You can also set the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I have found that the general settings work better than the specific ones.

During my tests, I discovered that the temperatures of the refrigerator were fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. The temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge didn't stray significantly from 38 degrees, and even the middle of the fridge was within one degree of 36. This is a solid performance but isn't quite at the top of our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. This fridge can be connected with a smart thermostat in order to gain more precise information on the internal temperature of your fridge.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made from grey-bodied stainless that has a "smudge proof" finish. It is capable of removing streaks and fingerprints, even compared to glossier stainless steel finishes on other appliances I've tested.
