Path of Exile Item Upgrading

In Path of Exile, item upgrading is among the best ways to improve your gear without relying upon massive drops or trade. This article will show you how to upgrade your gear.

Upgrades to equipment provide an increase in the item's stats. The amount of bonus varies depending on the rarity and quality of the upgrade component.

Components

Upgrade components make your weapons and armour better. They can be obtained by destroying enemies, finding them in item spheres or purchasing them from karma sellers. They can also be rescued from equipment that has them or by using an advanced salvage kit such as the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. Upgrade components cannot be destroyed when you remove them from the item.

The primary function of upgrade components is to allow an item to be upgraded but they also serve other purposes. They can be used to boost the value of an upgradeable item or they can be used to boost the experience gained when upgrading an existing weapon or piece of gear. They can be made for additional benefits. For instance, a crafted glyph will boost the upgrade chance of its target, while the boost upgrade can boost the defense or attack attribute of a weapon or armor.

Selecting an upgrade template in the GUI will allow you to bind it to an item. This will show an upgrade component list that the item can be upgraded to. You can also utilize the workbench to select an upgrade template. In either case, an Item Upgrader Kit will be upgraded once enough upgrade components have been collected.

Each component is assigned an experience multiplier. This determines the amount of experience an item can gain when upgraded using that component. For instance, organic components offer a higher experience multiplier than mechanical ones. It is therefore recommended to upgrade with organic components until you reach the multiplier of experience for the next rank of the weapon or gear, and then switch to mechanical upgrades.

For instance, the most expensive possible upgrade for a weapon is a weapon with tier 10. However, the most commonly used weapon upgrades are the tier 6 weapon and an armor upgrade of tier 5.

Sets

A set is a group of items that share bonuses. Each item can be upgraded at least once. The upgrade will increase the guaranteed bonuses. The first time you upgrade the set piece or weapon will give it a +1 increase to its primary stat. Following upgrades, the primary stats will be increased even more (for instance +1 for 12+/13+/14+) and each time an item upgrader mod is upgraded, one of its additional stats is increased randomly.
