Buying a Convertible Single to Double Stroller

There aren't many things more exciting than finding out that you're expecting your second child. But the process of preparing your family for this new addition is not without its own set of challenges.

One of these is selecting the best double pram for your requirements. This article will go over the options available and provide some tips on how to select the ideal pram for your growing family.

Convertible double prams

If you're looking to purchase a stroller that can grow with your family, a convertible single to double pram is a great alternative. These innovative frames such as the Cybex Aton 4 Twin expand in width to accommodate an additional seat. They also come with the option of adding a shopping basket, or two carrycots/carseats (with upper and lower adapters). This allows you to begin your family with a single buggy, and then upgrade when you have twins. They usually offer more configuration and seating options for both children than other types of double prams, and will have better weight distribution so they're generally easier to maneuver. Pros: Simple to use small and compact. Cons: Less space and storage space for both children when compared to other designs.

Tandem (in-line) double prams

As the name suggests, tandem prams come with two bassinets or seats that are positioned one in front of the other. Tandem prams are generally narrower than side by side double prams and are more maneuverable through doors and on public transport. However they don't offer enough storage space, and can be more difficult to access when both seats are in use if your toddler is sitting in the front seat.

Some first-time parents choose a tandem pram to secure their investment, especially if they're planning on more children that are similar in age. One of the most popular examples is our DUO2 pram that is initially designed as a single buggy, but can be converted to a twin stroller through the addition of a second seat. It can also be converted to a single stroller once your child is older and outgrows the buggy.

Tandem prams come in a variety of configurations and include the option for an infant to lie in a bassinet of the pram on top, while an older child is seated in the seat below. Many can be transformed into a travel unit by incorporating the car capsule, which is positioned in the top of the seat.

A side-by-side double stroller allows both children to share a ride and converse while they ride. This will help avoid getting up or fighting over toys, while the fact they're seated near to one another makes it possible to get through doors and other obstacles easily.

A side-by-side is also the perfect choice for grandparents who want to join in on the fun. They can carry both children around and assist with shopping, running errands or attending events. They're usually cheaper than tandem prams, which makes them an excellent choice for grandparents to help with babysitting.

Single prams

A single pram is only able to allow one seat or bassinet/carry cot - it is generally suitable from newborn up to around. 4 years old. Many single prams permit toddler boards (depending on the kind of toddler board you choose) to be attached at the back, so that a child can stand, or sit while you push the stroller.

Some first-time parents choose to future-proof their pram by purchasing a double pram option, such as our DUO2. This means you'll use the pram in a single mode while you have one child and then convert it into a tandem double pram when baby number two arrives. This saves you the cost and stress of purchasing an additional double pram.

Tandem or in-line double prams are larger than side by side double prams, yet they are more maneuverable on busy sidewalks and in stores. However, they can be more difficult to use during running, and require more effort to push when you're climbing or descending hills.

Side by side prams are much more spacious than tandem or in-line double prams but are a good choice for families with 2 children close in age. The children will be able to view and interact with each other from their seats. However, they are less maneuverable and may not fit through doorways that are standard as a tandem stroller.

Non-convertible side-by-side prams cannot be used in single mode. You'll have to buy another pram or stroller for your children's younger ones. However, they offer the benefit of being less expensive and last longer than convertible double prams, as they are not built to be used in both single and double modes. The main downside is that your child will quickly outgrow the side-byside seats and will have to be moved to a toddler seat which can be expensive.
