Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, the player must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant variations from the previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks, and items can only be upgraded a set number of times before they are "leveled out." The cost for upgrades increases with each level, but the required materials aren't as high. This allows players to focus their efforts on a select few items and maximize the effect of those items, instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

When an item is leveled out in this way, it is able to receive a new set of upgrade components, as well as an increase in the likelihood that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is called the Artisan's Energy. It resets at 0 if the upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
